'No Retreat Or Surrender, Iyayi’s Death’ll Not Be In Vain' - ASUU

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) Wednesday said that the death of its former president, Professor Festus Iyayi, will not be in vain, saying that the ongoing struggle will be fought to its logical conclusion.
Speaking with newsmen after a procession in honour of the ex-union leader, the chairman of the University of Ibadan branch, Dr Olusegun Ajiboye, said ASUU will continue to fight for the emancipation of the Nigerian education sector and the masses.

Describing Iyayi as a committed unionist and detrabilised Nigerian who had fought for the emancipation of the standard of education and the rights of Nigerians, said he has paid the supreme price to see that Nigeria was revitalised.
“We are going to ensure that his death is not in vain,” the union said, adding that it was committed to ensure the ongoing strike comes to an end as soon as the Federal Government address the grey areas.
Also speaking, the Vice Chancellor, University of Ibadan, Professor Isaac Adewole, expressed hope that what Iyayi stood for were not allowed to perish.
According to him, it is the hope of the late Iyayi that education is well funded, laboratories equipped and all roads rehabilitated.
Speaking, Comrade Femi Aborisade noted that the death of Iyayi was a challenge to ASUU, saying that the union should mount campaign against the use of sirens on Nigerian roads.

He explained that those who make use of sirens including government officials were wasting, “our resources and enough is enough.”
Paying tribute to Iyayi, Aborisade who commended ASUU for fighting a just cause, said there should be no retreat or surrender.
He added that any retreat or surrender by the union was a betrayal of the cause which Iyayi died for.
