A woman is suing Match.com for $1.5 billion dollars in a class-action lawsuit after she discovered her photo had been used at least 200 times in fake online profiles.
Criminal defense attorney Lisa Giovinazzo argued in favor of Florida model, Yuliana Avalos, in a Fox and Friends Weekend debate. She said because Match.com profits off of the profiles, they have a duty to provide accurate information.
Avalos said people constantly recognize her from Match.com and other affiliated websites.
Defense attorney David Schwartz argued that the people who made the fraudulent accounts are liable, not the online dating company. He countered, “The duty is not to govern or not to police every single person that’s on that website. They can’t possibly do that.”
Giovinazzo said they can start by using software that filters out profiles claiming to be in the United States but are actually created internationally.
