Yikes! A woman in the Pittsburgh area got more than she bargained for when she bought grapes at a local grocery store and found a venomous black widow spider inside the package.
Yvonne Whalen was washing the grapes when she felt something slimy on her finger. “The next thing I know I’m seeing this leg come up over a grape. I could have grabbed it instead of a grape! I mean that really revolts me.” she said.
Whalen was able to catch the spider and an insect expert confirmed that it was indeed a black widow. “There’s no mistaking a black widow even in juvenile form like this,” Ryan Bridge said.
Giant Food, the supermarket where Whalen purchased the grapes, has issued a statement reading, “We regret that this incident has occurred and are taking immediate steps to prevent a similar incident from happening in the future.”This is one of several incidents in the last few weeks. Spiders were also found in grapes at Aldi stores in Missouri and Wisconsin and a Kroger store in Michigan.
