On the evening Cristiano Ronaldo scored a brilliant hat-trick to seal Portugal’s passage to the World Cup next summer, FIFA extended the voting period for this year’s Ballon d’Or winner.
The ballot had closed on November 15, but captains, managers and media voters can deliberate for a further nine days if they have not already submitted their top three players.
FIFA, which confirmed their decision on Wednesday morning, also confirmed those who have already voted can reassess the names they have put forward.

FIFA Football Committee and a group of experts from France Football drew up a 23-man shortlist which was announced on October 29.
The award winner is then decided by three groups of voters. The first two are made up of coaches and captains of national teams and the third category is by selected members of the media and press.
The only prevailing rule is that players cannot vote for themselves.
The turnout of voters for the flagship players’ trophy was said to be poor, forcing FIFA to extend the period to the end of the month. It just so happens this was announced on Tuesday night, after Ronaldo rose to the occasion in Stockholm to send Portugal to Brazil and Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s Sweden packing
